Movie Review: Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na

Well, let’s start with good news, I had good time watching this movie. I was not at all bored. I cried a little, laughed a little. It was a sweet affair. Now the bad news. There is no story, if you were looking for something unique. It is usual boy meets girl story where both of them are not aware that they are in love.

Pros: College kids finally look like college kids. Performances by Imran and Genelia are sweet, well, script anyway did not demand performance of a lifetime from them. πŸ™‚ Supporting cast was fabulous. Be it husband-wife duo of Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah as Imran’s parents. I laughed with every Naseruddin Shah jig. All other kids (one of them Smita Patil-Raj Babbar’s son Prateek) are good too. Though villains are few, there is one who acts his part well, as a mean, insensitive guy. Music is distinctly A. R. Rehman-ish. Kabhi Kabhi Aditi…Music is foot tapping. Dialogues by Abbas Tyrewala (also the director) are crisp. oh, and do not miss Khan brothers (Arbaaz and Sohail) dressed as whacko cowboys. πŸ™‚

If you did not like Jab We Met, chances are you will not like this movie too.

Cons: Predictable story (though it does not hurt much) and narrative style. If you cut out those narrations, story is smoother.

What’s that? A positive review (You will need to watch the movie to understand this sentence.) πŸ˜‰

Rating: 4/5

Other Movies I Watched Recently

Holiday: It is obvious that movie is directed by a woman. It is about two women, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet who both have guy problems. Both of them are opposite in nature. One who does not hesitate to punch her cheating guy in face and other who is constantly trampled over by her ex-boyfriend. She keeps forgiving and he keeps acting as a jerk. Watch it for some fun, as how they find love of their lives when they exchange their lives for two-week holiday.

I loved it when Cameron Diaz kept imagining trailers of her love life. πŸ™‚

Rating: 3.5/5

Mr. Bean’s Holiday:

Another Holiday movie, and I got to see lot of France in this one. Rowan Atkinson wins a travel package to Cannes. He travels on cycle, slowest possible scooter and train. Every possible disaster strikes before he can make to his destination, the beach at Cannes. Unwittingly, he finds a reluctant kid as his companion on his travails.

My favorite scene in the movie is: Atkinson barges in Cannes Film Festival when in a boring movie, by an egoistic director who has cast himself in every frame of his movie, is being screened. Rowan sabotages the show to make an interesting one. πŸ™‚

Now this is one kid’s movie that even adults can enjoy.

Rating: 4/5

I would soon post a friend’s interesting travelogue for Europe. πŸ™‚

I donno if its jus me, but I dint find JTYJN so (with extra o’s) good; average if u ask me. I enjoyed JWM though. According to me, JTYJN was a bit dragging with certain scenes and the song sequences totally forced. The Naseeruddin – Ratna sequences were fresh, and so were the two ‘Rathore’ Khans. Probably, I expected a lot from Aamir Khan productions 😦

Stay away from Love Story 2050, pleassseeeeeeeeeeeeee. Dumb-est movie this year. With Harman, ‘plagiarism’ has touched the highest level; he acts, sits, dances, speaks, and does everything else that he can, exactly like Hrithik.

    I dont like Mr.Bean …….. or rather,I hate him 😦 …..

  3. 3 Suda July 7, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Good, now I am going to watch Jane tu……

This theme looks nice, I think I should try it πŸ˜€

//College kids finally look like college kids.// LOL πŸ˜€ SRK as college kid in KKHH really sucked!

//If you did not like Jab We Met, chances are you will not like this movie too.// ow on earth did u know that I didnt like JWM ??? and wrote such a befitting sentence?? πŸ˜€ πŸ™‚

The slowest scooter scene in Bean movie was really funny!! πŸ™‚

  5. 5 harshasrisri July 7, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I watched it first day, but Matinee. (had to finish off last of my sem exams the same day).
Coming to the movie, it is a breather compared to the stereotypes that tend to come now-a-days… i agree it was a slow movie… not very entertaining… but definitely interesting! True, thank god i didn’t have to see SRK as a college-goer πŸ˜›

  6. 6 Rekha July 7, 2008 at 8:08 pm

i think Jane tu dont deserve 4 /5 ….after all it is the same old story of a guy n gal being friends n then in love … n it is Genelias n imrans perfomance that make u attracted to this movie …
n about the music of the film ..no words to say Rehman rocks !!!!!!!! πŸ™‚

  7. 7 Nita July 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

You’ve given it a good rating and I think I should watch it! πŸ™‚ I was busy last week-end, so let me see if I can catch anyone to go with on a week-day! Or maybe I’ll just wait until the next week-end!

I liked the movie. And I think I liked it because it wasn’t complicated. It was just too simple and I guess the director knew what he was doing. If you noticed, when they were introducing the story to Jiggy’s girlfriend, they themselves said that it’s no new story. I think the motive was to bring out the freshness and the characters and that worked brilliantly.

I liked all the actors. Imran was good, although he does tend to make weird faces. Genelia is good too. Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseerudin Shah were very funny. The entire hall was in splits when Naseerudin started dancing. Both of them are great actors. The Sushant guy and the Meow’s brother also were good. I loved her brothers room. It was a dream. Arbaaz and Sohail were hilarious. Sohail looks crazy anyway but Arbaaz managed it well too. The entire Ranjhod ke Rathod angle was nice.

The music I thought was different from what Rahman does. At least the way he sang Kabhi Kabhi Aditi was different. I’ve not really heard him sing like that. It was a nice change. I loved Pappu Can’t dance too. The lyrics were too good, especially the part where they go – “Rado ki ghadi haathon mein hai, perfume Gucci waala”. Aamir’s been on a promotional overdrive nowadays. Him and his Ghajini cut is everywhere!

@Poo – 4! A bit too much noo? I have already written about this movie and yeaah! you know it πŸ˜‰

  10. 10 praneshachar July 8, 2008 at 5:13 am

If you say it is same old story and liked the comment and I too feel 4!! is bit high. Such movies are also needed as they are not having stories which needs serious followup and thinkings nice for a just watch and enjoy NO NO iI have not seen the movie just based on a fine review my thoughts
POoonam you have got a close watch on anything you do great going I simply adore U

  11. 11 Poonam Sharma July 8, 2008 at 9:36 am

@Vimal: It is alright to say that JTYJN was average, as it had nothing in story. It was only presentation. I like all mushy stuff, however cliche, so the rating. πŸ™‚ Plus after so many disappointments (Sarkar Raj and TPTM), this movie was better!

I have to still hear someone praise Love Story 2050. πŸ™‚

@dinu: Chances are you could liek this one even if you dislike Mr. Bean. There is obscenity and not usual stupidity. There is actually a story and anticipation how it will happen. πŸ™‚

@Suda: If you find romantic things nice, you should go for it. This one is sweet.

@Reema: Bingo, I agree with your every word. But you have not commented on Holiday, have you watched it?

@Harshasrisri: You must be a real movie buff to watch movie even with your final sem exams. I would n’t be surprised if you wrote a post where you were replaying movie during an exam. πŸ˜€ j/k After so many disappointing movies this year, I was kinda thankful for JTYJN! πŸ™‚

@Rekha: Most love stories are cliche, specially in Bollywood. But JTYJN is realistic. I gave Sarkar Raj 3.5, so JTYJN certainly deserves more as it was better. πŸ™‚ Yes, Rehman rocks!

@Nita: Frankly this one has no story, it is predictable. So there was not much to write in review. But it is well presented. I was lenient with rating because this year after a long while, I was not bored in theater. If you like mushy stuff, it is for you. Movie is sweet, funny and realistic. πŸ™‚ Let me know how you find it.

@Ish: Right it was no new story but presented with freshness f characters. I liked that gujju bhai. πŸ™‚ Aaj meri surprise party hai and light dim kar

I too laughed when Naseeruddin Shah was on-screen. Yes, brother’s room was a dream. I agree all characters were good. THe way music is mixed in Kabhi Kabhi Aditi is very Rehman. You hear it anywhere and you know its Rehman, it has his Midas touch.

@RJ: I liked this one better than Sarkar Raj. Sarkar Raj got 3.5, then I wuold say this one does deserve 4. I am partial to all mushy stuff, by the way. πŸ˜‰

@Praneshachar: I have deducted that 1 point for story, it was well-presented and nice performances. you will have to think which one did not perform well. Still you would not come up with a definite answer. My be I am lenient with romantic stuff, even if cliche-d. This was definitely better than Sarkar Raj, that got 3.5 from me. It is perhaps watchable for only one time and that is enough. Of course, it is not a timeless movie.

Thanks for your comment as always!

i saw that bean’s holiday movie too. was yucks. saw it only because my friend was sponsoring my ticket. heh.

btw, you should watch ‘Johnny English’ if you can. Rowan Atkinson plays a bumbling secret agent. That’s a good laugh.

  13. 13 vimal July 8, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Good review for Love story…hmm…i ve got this for ya…funniest good review i ‘ve ever come across for that crap πŸ™‚

  14. 14 Poonam Sharma July 8, 2008 at 2:34 pm

@Liju: I have never watched any Bean movie before, only few episodes, some of which had bit-oblique content. So movie was nice to me, I liked the France locales and that Cannes movie scenes a lot. πŸ™‚

I will check out Johnny English.

@Vimal: This is really funny, first positive things I have heard about Love Story..he he he..still laughing after reading this!

  15. 15 Xylene July 8, 2008 at 3:41 pm

    Johny english was real fun.
Mr Bean’s Holiday is something I missed. I think I should get a dvd.

  16. 16 Sakhi July 9, 2008 at 9:54 am

Loved “jane tu…” awesome and me too like the mushy things and am partial to it! πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

  17. 17 Poonam Sharma July 9, 2008 at 2:45 pm

@Xylene: I will rent Johnny English this weekend. Satya (yes, I know you will exclaim I haven’t watched it yet), If Only are also on my list for weekend watching. πŸ™‚

@Sakhi: It is nostalgic, sweet and fun. πŸ™‚

  18. 18 maqsood July 9, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Hi,I think JAANE TU YA JAANE NA deserves 4/5 bcoz Imran and Genelia played a v.good role.

Poonam: Glad you agree with my rating! πŸ™‚

  19. 19 Nishu July 10, 2008 at 2:00 pm

I predict that I am not going to like this movie πŸ˜€

my rating 3/5 without watching it πŸ˜›

    will watch it today πŸ˜€

Poonam: I am curious why are you prejudices against the movie without watching? πŸ˜‰ YOu dont like love stories? πŸ˜›

  20. 20 Arpit July 12, 2008 at 6:07 pm

well i would surely rate it 4/5 after seeing all its promos . Fresh faces with buzzing energy surely should make this movie outperform others

  21. 21 Sidharth Kumaar July 13, 2008 at 9:08 am

  22. 22 Poonam Sharma July 14, 2008 at 11:15 am

@Arpit: I liked the movie because it was fun and nostalgic about college life. When do you plan to watch this one or you already have?

@Sidharth: I am sorry you did not like movie. But I did. πŸ™‚ It was fun for thins mentioned in my review. and as other said it had nostalgia about good times spent in college.

I did watch Black and White. Though intention of movie was good and acting also good, I would rate the movie only 3. That too liberally. πŸ˜›

  23. 23 Arpit July 14, 2008 at 3:37 pm

well i finally watched the movie yesterday………….awesome………….couldn’t expect more from it……paisa vasool indeed πŸ™‚

Poonam: Yes, for one time watch, it is good. πŸ™‚

  24. 24 Vaibhav July 15, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Nice review, and even though I don’t watch too many Hindi movies, seems like this one might happen (especially since my wife wants to watch it too)… I guess Movie Reviews do have a place…. πŸ™‚

Poonam: Some friends I know insist that movie reviews are in public interest. Don’t go to this movie expecting anything profound, just let yourself go, you will hopefully have fun with few hiccups. πŸ™‚

  25. 25 Mahak July 16, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Nice review Poonam!!! And quite remarkable of you to mention about NO STORY line!!! But still there’s something unique this movie offers->FRESHNESS..am so freakin’ tired of Yash Chopra romance in swiss locales..this movie brought natural freshness with it..
and yes The Holiday is on my list of must watch now..Thanks for sharing!!

  26. 26 Mahak July 16, 2008 at 2:57 pm

And yes the music rocks-I like all of them apart fro mthe current top favs Kabhi kabhi aditi and pappu cant dance…I like nazrein milaaana and kahin to hogi vo also

  27. 27 Xylene July 16, 2008 at 9:11 pm

You have NOT watched Johnny English??? πŸ˜€ lol just kidding.
I like the movie.. Just like Mr Bean..
I am way behind all the latest movies these days. I have want to see the latest Will Smith flick on DVD ofcourse.

  28. 28 Reema July 17, 2008 at 7:28 am

@Poonam No i have not watched holiday. I saw Jaane Tu in weekend and I think its totally baseless to compare Jab we met and Jaane Tu. Both r totally different stories and styles. I dont understand why people are doing it. Moreover Jaane Tu is better than Jab we met cuz 1)Kareena? eeekks! 2)She talks too much. πŸ˜€

  29. 29 Poonam Sharma July 17, 2008 at 11:49 am

@Mahak: Thanks, girl! I too like Kabhi Kabhi…

@Xylene: I watched If Only last weekend, I will watch Johnny English this weekend. Is it that good? People are saying Hancock is not so good.

@Reema: The similarity between Jab We Met and Jaane to Ya Naa is that both are boy meets girl story, both have protagonist who realise their love late. Some people hate such movies as they find it cliched and kiddish.

But I loved both, Jab We Met and Jaane Tu ya na..Glad you liked the latter too. πŸ™‚

  30. 30 Nova August 5, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Good one… I love holiday… yet to watch the other two!!!

Poonam: I know you loved Holiday, you watched it before I did. πŸ™‚

  31. 31 Sameer August 10, 2008 at 6:40 pm

The movie was great. The concept is sooooooooooooooo sweet and cute and the presentation is just fabulous. I can watch it as many times as possible no matter what one might say or write about it.

Poonam: One more fan πŸ™‚ I am not sure I can watch it again but enjoyed it a lot for first time. πŸ™‚
